He could imagine the mockery when the Valkyries came to collect his body, dead of a broken neck after all his years of battle. The report to his Family would be respectful, but behind the scenes at the Morgue there would be laughter and speculation about the Prime that died so ignobly. They were a largely irreverent group, their sole purpose to ensure that the dead stayed dead and that there was never a repeat of the Phage Virus.

Gregor held perfectly still and strained to listen for any sound. It could be Duadenora out there, cleaning up after the attack. Or it could be Hanson’s Acolytes hunting for new victims after killing everyone else.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

Gregor was sweating and trembling with effort by the time he climbed out through the vent of what looked like a store room. There were metal racks pressed against the walls holding stacks of opaque plasticene bins marked with black and red labels that the dim blue glow of the safety lighting made impossible to read.

He scrubbed his face with his sleeve, then cursed and pulled off his formal jacket, dropping it on the floor. He was covered in dust and stunk of fear.

Though he hoped Zero wouldn’t really ruin things. He didn’t need his first introduction to Society to involve a scandal. Considering he was joining the Duadenora rather than a lesser Family though, there wasn’t much that the Society matrons could do to him.

He watched as Park took Zero’s arm in what was supposed to look like brotherly affection, but that involved whitened knuckles on Zero’s glass and a hidden wince. Park faced Gregor and said, “I’m taking Zero to some privacy and I will be right back. Promise to stay here?”
