And now, despite himself, his biology was making itself known by wanting, craving. It gave him the sense that he was losing himself and it was only a matter of time before he was a gibbering mess and trying to crawl into Park's skin.

"How much longer do I have to be here?" he asked, trying to sound cool. His blood was burning through his veins and there was a trickle of sweat down his spine, but he refused to show how bothered he was. Continue reading “Paradigm Shift 32”

CHAPTER EIGHT

Stepping into the Nursery was a jarring experience. The youngest child there was ten years old, a towheaded boy with guileless blue eyes and bitten red lips. He was the pampered baby of the Family.

Gregor remembered a time when there had been children everywhere. People had walked around with babies cradled in their arms with no trace of fear. Now children grew up in armored prisons and those born since the Plague were as precious as any Third but rarer. Continue reading “Paradigm Shift 31 (ch 8)”

EXCERPT:

He was a handsome stranger in painted on pants and Chuck Taylors. His dark brown hair curled around his ears in enticing tousled waves. He had rich olive skin and a straight nose with perfect nostrils. He was built in lean lines and looked like he should be an endearingly dorky guy, completely oblivious to his own good looks.

Except he walked like a predator. He tried not to, but his hips insisted on falling into their natural position when he didn’t concentrate. An arrogant, rolling walk that caught and held the eye, luring in his prey.

He’d always been so well-known that he couldn’t have pretended to be anyone other than himself. He was more easily recognizable than the Master. The name FAIZEL was synonymous with power and prestige. He was always near the top of every Most Wanted list the Resistance put out.

He’d always enjoyed playing with the Resistance. Hunting them down and spoiling their plans had been endlessly entertaining. It was why he’d never just completely exterminated them all the way the Master wanted.

The Master was talking synthetic blood and genocide. He had wanted a world completely devoid of normal human life. The Phageless would cease to exist and only the New Breed would remain. He wanted a world of rules and restrictions, a totalitarian empire with himself at the top.

Faizel enjoyed being powerful, but he wanted the thrill of the hunt. He was young and virile and he’d been Reborn without a soul. But he still remembered his human days and all that burning hate and rage was still there, bubbling under the surface of his skin. "I never tried to fool you about my identity. It was just something that happened." Tersoe sounded so defensive that Gregor wanted to laugh.

"Neither one of us was completely honest," Gregor said. "We both screwed things up," he turned to face Tersoe, "not that it matters very much." Continue reading “Paradigm Shift 28”

Content Warning: hostage situation

It felt like they were hidden for hours, days even, but that was just his sense of time getting away from him. He'd sweated through his shirt, but he was scared to take off his tuxedo jacket because waves of cold would suddenly hit him with no warning, causing him to shiver uncontrollably and he clenched his teeth to still their chattering. It was completely miserable.

At least Park had stopped asking him how he was doing, seeming to sense that the answer was about to be something unpleasant. Gregor felt like he was going to go off the rails at any moment. Continue reading “Paradigm Shift 16”

Gregor rubbed the tip of his nose. "As long as you're there, I think tomorrow will be okay."

"It will be fine," Park said. "I've been to the theater many times before and Persephone's Lament is a great mix of beautiful costumes, singing, and the dancing is fantastic."

"So you've seen it before?" Gregor cocked his head.

Park shrugged. "I was sent there in the course of my duties. I didn't get to watch the whole thing, but what I did see completely blew me away." The corners of his lips turned up when he glanced at Gregor. "I think I'm going to enjoy the opportunity to see the entire show with great company." Continue reading “Paradigm Shift 10”

Gregor looked toward Park, ignoring the way Zero spluttered beside him. "How was your trip?" he asked brightly. "Did anything interesting happen?"

Park gave him the glimmer of a smile. "Nothing that I am free to speak of to you."

Gregor pouted. "Why do you have to be so cruel to me?" He smiled at the server that appeared in front of him with a long cart carrying soup filled bowls. "You could tell me something fun," he pleaded with Park.

"There wasn't much fun going on," Park said. "I went, I saw, I came back. Nothing much happened." Continue reading “Paradigm Shift 09”

Paradigm Shift 07 (ch 03)

Chapter Three

Being hustled out of the hospital as precious cargo wasn't quite the slice of awesome he would have thought it would be. For one thing, he wasn't worth all the pomp and circumstance, and really wasn't feeling it at all.

Dr. Haden and his staff had done all kinds of tests on him, some a little painful and most embarrassingly invasive. Gregor had never had a complete work up because he'd never had a doctor he could trust to not turn him in. Continue reading “Paradigm Shift 07 (ch 03)”

Paradigm Shift 06

Gregor shook his head. "They always looked the same and the bottles never looked like they were tampered with or anything. My father was known to have a dangerous temper. I don't think there's anyone that wants to mess with him."

"We will be running a thorough physical on you," the doctor said. He pulled his com out of his pocket. "I'll make all the arrangements." Continue reading “Paradigm Shift 06”

Paradigm Shift 05

"I know I shouldn't have been taking the suppressants, but I was scared to just stop using," he blurted. "I always heard that just stopping without having a doctor or someone to monitor you, it could be deadly. I was scared to go to Medical because it was too expensive. And I was scared they would have to report me."

Park cocked his head. "So you're rather high strung are you? Some could see that as a flaw."

Gregor shook his head. "Who cares what they think? I don't want to Bond with any of them anyway."

Park looked a bit intrigued. "Who do you want to Bond with?"

"I don't know." Gregor shrugged. "I haven't found anyone I'm interested in yet."

Park smiled, a tiny little thing, just a slight curve of the lips, but a smile nonetheless. "You are a man of discerning taste I see. A little foolish, but a person of character."
