Summary: Gregor has been living as a Two for most of his life, but it’s a lie. He’s really a Third. And now he’s been found out and pulled into the lives of one of the great Families.

“I am a member of the Family,” Park stated as though it was everyday kind of news, and to him it probably was. Gregor was shocked enough for two people. “The Family requested that I assess you for the possibility of merging your genome with the Duadenora.”

“And I passed?” Gregor hadn’t meant to ask, but the words had slipped out.

Park looked amused. “So far.”

The sound of someone at the apartment door pulled him out of bed. He wrapped a robe around his aching body and stumbled to the door.

One look at Park’s face and Gregor knew the man could tell the Transfer was successful. But Park didn’t say anything about it so Gregor didn’t have to hit him.

“Give me a minute to shower and get dressed.” Gregor stepped back from the door so Park could come in. “What do we have scheduled today? More Farm work?”

“We can spend a few hours on the Farm if you’d like, but tonight is the rehearsal for the Bonding Ceremony.”

He hated feeling so out of sorts. His brain and his body were working on different frequencies and he was left to flounder around desperately.

“What’s with that frown? It doesn’t suit such a pretty face.” Zero touched the back of Gregor’s hand with his fingers.

Gregor fought to keep from jerking his hand away. “This pretty face looks good with any emotion on.” He drew his hand away from Zero’s caress to cross his arms and lean back in his chair casually.

It didn’t escape his notice that his head ended up closer to Park. He was just glad not to have Zero in his personal space. Continue reading

For days, weeks, months, *years*, there had been a frustration building under his skin. The knowledge that whatever happened, he was powerless and his choices for his own life didn’t matter. No one was going to let them matter.

Because he was a Third.

He was a viable breeder for a dying humanity, and they were never going to let him forget it. Not until he gave them the babies they demanded or grew too old. They would use him up and throw him away. Continue reading

“If I wasn’t a Third,” Gregor said, and it wasn’t bitter at all. He’d given up the dreams of Competition a long time ago.

“Yes,” Park said, because it was true.

Gregor’s status as a Third precluded him from any form of Competition. After the Plague, he was considered too important to risk. Not that it meant much to him now; his time when he could have feasibly Competed was over. At twenty-eight years old, he was considered past his prime and that was simply reality.

Sometime while he wasn’t paying attention, he’d gotten too old. It was strange to think about.

“It was quick,” he said. At Park’s questioning look, Gregor shrugged. “Sorry, just realizing my own mortality.” Continue reading

He pushed himself away from the pool edge and let his feet go over his head in a dolphin-flip before swimming toward the other end of the pool and back in a quick lap. He needed a chance to regain his control. Otherwise he would end up saying something unfortunate.

His mouth had gotten him into trouble before.

By the time he looked back, Zero was gone. Probably off flirting with the pretty girls he so obviously preferred. It was a relief. Continue reading
